Becoming A Birth Doula

Becoming a doula is an incredibly rewarding profession that can provide great joy and satisfaction to both doulas and their clients. To become a doula, candidates must complete doula training and receive certification. By choosing Birth Blessings, birth doula training is a comprehensive program designed to give you the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to support mothers during labor.
In taking the doula training program provided by Birth Blessings, birth doulas will learn how to adjust to the needs of their clients in order to provide the best support for mother and child. During training, doulas learn how to assess the needs of their clients and provide appropriate physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual support. They also gain an understanding of changes in the body during labor and birth so they can help clients make informed decisions about their care. Because Birth Blessings values evidence-based research, the curriculum ensures that you will not only know the research behind how, but why.
Birth doulas are taught about different birthing options such as home births or hospital births so they are able to explain these options to their clients. By having doulas present in the birth room, they can advocate for safe practice for both mom and baby. Doulas also gain knowledge about calming techniques such as massage or aromatherapy that can be used during labor or postpartum.
Furthermore, by receiving your birth doula certification here at Birth Blessings, you will not only get to experience professional, hands-on training through quality workshops and in-person mentorship, but also the welcoming support of the Birth Blessings community.
This doula training program is the perfect opportunity for you to gain necessary skills and experience in order to provide families with excellent doula services. Start your birth doula certification journey today!
Why Doula Training?
Benefits
Becoming a doula makes a positive impact on the lives of expectant mothers and their families. Throughout your journey as a doula, you'll learn about the various benefits you will be able to provide. These benefits include:
Medical benefits
Emotional benefits
Mental benefits
The medical benefits you will be able to provide for pregnant mothers are numerous. Research shows that women who have a birth doula present with them are 60% less likely to request for epidural, and 40% less likely to need Pitocin to speed up the labor process. Not only does research suggest the doula's presence reduce pain for both mother and baby, it also reduces the risk of C-sections and uterine infections. Additionally, babies born with doula assistance are four times less likely to have a low birth weight. Furthermore, mothers supported by a doula require less medication and are more likely to have shorter labors. Ultimately, this can lead to fewer birthing complications.
As for emotional benefits, mothers who have a doula throughout their birthing process show less signs of stress and report to have more positive childbirth experiences. This also decreases the levels of anxiety a woman feels either with her pregnancy or birth. Receiving physical comfort as well as reassurance allows women to feel more secure in their environment, therefore resulting in happier mommas and healthier babies.
Through your support as a doula, you will not only be aiding mothers in medical and emotional support, but mental as well. Women who have the guidance of a birth doula have shown to have a healthier state of mind and higher self-confidence.
A doula's presence is important in helping expectant mothers build a sense of trust and safety before, during, and after their birthing process. Becoming a birth doula is more than just hours and workshops - it's about providing for families through your support and guidance.

Course & Certification Details
How Long Does It Take To Complete The Course?
The Birth Doula Training Program is a self-paced program that is valid for up to one year. If the program is still not completed over the 12-month period, extensions or renewals are permitted. Extension or renewal fees are required.
What Does The Training Program Consist Of?
Throughout the self-paced program, you will have reading assignments, course quizzes and book reports, all without any mandatory medical experience. Because Birth Blessing's training program is a custom curriculum, it takes on a more traditional approach to doula work. The course consists of assignments that are both online and in person.
Workshops will be required throughout your training, meaning that you will be actively mentored by a certified trainer with clients. At Birth Blessings, workshops are a valuable part of one's training in order to receive hands-on experience to adequately prepare you. Because every birth plan and experience is different, it is important that birthing doulas are informed about the various options provided for the sake of the mother's health while equally respecting her decisions.

Is Previous Medical Experience Required?
Unlike nurse-midwives who typically need a doctoral or masters degree, becoming a certified doula does not require a lengthy medical background. While no previous medical experience is required to become a certified doula, the Birth Doula Training Program does provide in-depth knowledge about childbirth that may be beneficial to those with prior medical experience.
Do Certifications Have To
Be Renewed?
After the completion of online coursework as well as hands-on experiences, an exit-interview with your mentor/trainer will conclude your certification process. Once you have received your certification, it does not have to be annually renewed. However, it is strongly encouraged that you attend a minimum of three workshops a year, since doula business is constantly being improved.
Are Certifications Valid Internationally?
Birth Doula certification is recognized world wide, adding a flexibility to your doula career. With your certification you can provide services to expecting families wherever you may go.
